Bandai AT-AT with LED lighting – Part 2

The legs

Once the head with the tricky LED placement was finished I started with the legs. These are a joy to build because everything fits together so well and because each leg can be articulated individually just like the “real” thing. Amazing job done by Bandai.

The main body

As I needed to fit the 9V battery in there I had to cut away quite a bit of material on the inside. I first started out doing this with the exacto knife and quickly realised that I need a professional tool to do this.

chiseling away by hand using the knife was a pain – using the dremel would have only taken a couple of minutes….

So off I went and bought a cordless Dremel 8100 which made the job much easier.

The 9V battery just barely fits in there. I wish there were smaller 9V batteries….

Placing the miniature on/off switch

I had a miniature on/off switch from another project which might just fit into the bottom of the walker. I used the dremel cut away some of the internal details that are not visible anyway, drille trough a circular detail at the bottom of the walker and this now allows me to use a pen or metal pin to turn the LED lights on or off. A push button switch would have been even better but I did not have one handy at the time.

The hole will be covered up by a bottom plate where the legs connect to – so it did not need to be that perfect.
You can see the rocker switch below the circular hole (not filed down properly yet). Once everything is painted and the legs are on there this will be totally invisible.
