GOOGLE WIFI – Gadget review
I have been using Apple Wifi devices for at least 10 years and once Apple announced that they would no longer support their wireless devices I decided to do some research.
After comparing many products online I ended up purchasing the Google Wifi set of three access points.
Very easy to set up
Installation is very straight forward and done via the provided Google Wifi app. You can’t do it using your PC or MAC which is what I have been used to for years, so at the beginning I was a little skeptic.
The Google Wifi app did manage the setup of my three access points flawlessly.
Great performance
After a quick test I got very good Wifi speeds at around 500Mbps. This was about double of what I was getting with my old Apple Airport Extreme Wifi router.
Google Wifi App with many helpful features
What really amazed me was the wealth of information I was able to get directly from the Google wifi app compared to what I had at hand using the standard apple airport software.
The Google Wifi app has some great features:
- Gives you a graphical overview of your internet connection, Wifi points and devices
- Show your network speed in realtime and historically at the push of a button
- Show the health of your wifi points
- Show the health of all devices connected to your network
- Show the speed at which these devices are connected
But it does not stop there. You can also define a guest network as well as limit the internet access for certain devices or groups of devices. Great if you have kids : )
Verdict
I’ve now been using this setup for about 6 months and am still quite happy with it. I also added one more wifi access point in the garage to connect my Tesla more reliably.
It’s great that the app lets you look at when each device was connected. That way I can always see when a Tesla Software update is being downloaded in the background : )
